Rocker Mark McGrath and fiancée Carin Kingsland sure have their hands full. Not only are they adjusting to life with their eight-week-old twins, Lydon and Hartley, but they're also caring for three disabled dogs: Lola, Ruby and Chopper.
Lola, a 12-year-old Brussels Griffon is no longer able to walk. Ruby, 10, is a Japanese chin who lost an eye in a fight with another dog. And Chopper, the 7-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel, is deaf.
"Lola is my original baby; I have her tattooed on my arm," says McGrath, 42, who will host Don't Forget the Lyrics! this fall. "We have to get up every couple of hours at night to take her to potty, so she's prepared us to have children."
Adds the Sugar Ray singer: "She's a huge part of the family, man. She's given us some great years, so I hope she can stick around a little more to enjoy the kids – and so they can pull her ears!"
Ruby has been the boldest with the little babies. "She just wants to lick them to death – it's weird," he says. "So we have to keep her away. I once fell asleep with [my son] on my chest and woke up to her bad breath licking the top of Lydon's head and go, 'OK, this has got to not happen.' "
But overall, the dogs have adjusted well to the infants, who were born on April 29. "The dogs have been amazing. They know not to go into the nursery – they stop just short of the [door] and just lay on the ground quietly," says McGrath. "They'll leave the area to bark. They're really very intuitive. They know that they're supposed to protect them."
