Sock Monkey, meet Socktopus!
The classic plush toy gets a leggy update thanks to Clarity Miller, a seamstress who spends her days creating stuffed animals from recycled sweaters for her adorable Etsy store, Friends of Socktopus.
“I started out with sock monkeys about 14 years ago,” Miller tells PEOPLEpets.com. Eight legs later, it’s the brown and white octopus that’s just begging for a hug. Other designs have followed, like the wide-eyed Sweater Owl and colorfully cute Wiener Dog; now her house is full of miscellaneous animal parts just waiting to be assembled.
Since Miller sews all of her creations, the business has become a large part of her life – and a way to support herself as she deals with chronic kidney disease. “Some days you’ll find me stuffing 30 Socktopus heads,” she says. “Other days it’s 15 Wiener Dog bodies.” She draws inspiration from fellow crafters, vintage children’s books and even her own lovable cats: Inky, Mabel and Fatty.
The Mustache Monkey and Socktopus may be bestsellers, but the Wiener Dogs are Miller’s favorite because she loves finding their “bright, zesty fabrics.” She takes custom orders depending on how busy she is, and if an animal she gives life to happens to lose a limb or eye at some point, she’ll happily repair it for you for free – talk about customer service!
Check out Miller’s Etsy shop and get a Wiener Dog (only $26) or Socktopus ($25) for the animal lover in your life.
