Sheryl Crow Speaks Up for Rescue Animals

We already know Sheryl Crow is an animal lover – she's stepped up for wild horses in the past, and is a big proponent of shelter pets. And now she's taking her animal activism a step further, starring in a new public service announcement for the Humane Society of the United States.

In the clip, which features her new single, "Summer Day," Crow encourages people to adopt rescue animals and donate to the HSUS to stop animal cruelty. In fact, for the next three weeks, anyone who contributes to the organization will receive a free download of a track off her new album, 100 Miles from Memphis.

"Sheryl Crow is a dedicated supporter of animal welfare, and The Humane Society of the United States is honored to have her join us in our efforts to end animal abuse," HSUS president and CEO Wayne Pacelle said in a statement. "The HSUS has already been able to rescue nearly 10,000 animals in 2010 alone, and thanks to Sheryl and all our donors, we will be able to continue fighting animal cruelty on all fronts."

Crow, who plays with horses and pups in the spot, is particularly keen on the organization's horse-related efforts. "It's wonderful what the Humane Society does here in Tennessee," she says in a behind-the-scenes video. "There's a real history of these animals. To not appreciate and respect that they were here first and they are as much owners of the land as we are, it grieves me."
