Kristen Bell may be engaged to Dax Shepard, but there are three little furballs who also share her heart: rescue dogs Shakey, Lola and Sadie (not pictured). And while loving and caring for them is more than enough, the actress is taking her animal activism a step further, launching a fund-raising campaign through Crowdrise.com aimed at helping pets with special needs.

Bell's own pup, Hurricane Katrina rescue Sadie, required extensive ear surgeries and was missing most of her teeth when the actress met her at the Helen Woodward Center in 2005. "Oh, she was just this bundle of goodness ... sweet ... shy ... affectionate," Bell writes on her Crowdrise.com page, "but clearly in need of extra special care."

The actress put then-11-year-old Sadie through a surgery that rerouted her right ear canal to her neck ("So yeah – now Sadie hears through her neck," Bell writes), and today, she's thriving. "What I loved so much about Sadie was that through it all, the pain, the less she'd just experienced, the uncertainty of what was next, she was just this total loveball," Bell writes. "I saw that all this dog needed was a place to hang her hat. And I was going to give it to her."

Because of her experiences with Sadie, not to mention her love for Shakey and Lola, Bell has dedicated herself to raising money for the Humane Society of the United States, earmarked for dogs with special needs. "With money raised through Kristen Bell's project, we'll be able to provide some funding to our shelter partners who take 'special needs' pets from rescue operations," explains HSUS senior director Betsy McFarland. The organization hopes to help animals plucked from hoarder situations, puppy mills and other disasters.

Crowdrise.com was created by actor Edward Norton as a way to utilize social networking as a means of fund-raising for various causes. To learn more about Bell's campaign, and to donate, visit her Crowdrise.com page here.
