REVIEW: PoopPac Pouch Performs Double Duty on Walks
Poop sucks. There, I said it. If I had a dime for every time my dog Baxter sniffed another dog and then tangled up his leash while I patiently gripped a plastic baggie full of his feces, I might have enough to shell out for the solution: The PoopPac ($29.95).

The self-proclaimed "First Portable Carrier for Dog Waste" enables dog walkers to conceal pet excrement until a proper receptacle presents itself. Seemingly created for multi-taskers, the PoopPac is a compact purse-like contraption that can transform into a belt accessory, a wristlet or stroller accoutrement.

It's worth mentioning that there is something superhero-esque about the PoopPac. Its polyurethane casing coupled with an impressive assortment of high-tech gadgetry, including an activated charcoal filler intended to absorb odors and moisture, suggests that not only does the act of dog walking require an upgrade, it demands a caped crusader.

My first reaction upon throwing the Pac over my shoulder for an evening walk with Baxter was, "Is this really necessary?" Nevertheless, I put my skepticism aside, loaded the rear compartment with my cell phone and keys, and off we went on our evening rounds. A bonafide city dog, Bax almost instantly relieved himself on the sidewalk a meter or so from our front door. Excited, I knelt down to usher the fresh waste into the main compartment of the PoopPac.

While the product's brochure extols the virtue of using the Pac to avoid "too-close-for-comfort" scenarios between say, your warm baggie and your cold beverage, it fails to mention that making a deposit can be tricky. I had to put my beverage down in order to close the Pac, only to unzip the pouch moments later to drop my cargo in a trash bin.

The basis for the product is understandable: There is nothing worse than engaging in polite conversation with a fellow dog walker, with freshly loaded baggie in hand. However, I fear that poop toting may just be one of the downsides of owning a dog in the city. As far as I'm concerned, walking a block with a small bag of poop in hand trumps carrying a shiny black purse full of the stuff. However, it's fair to say I might be singing a different tune if I had a larger dog. Thankfully, PoopPac plans to unveil larger sizes in a variety of prints and fabrics this fall.
