For most people, the Fourth of July is about barbecues and fireworks. But for singer Eric Church, this year's holiday weekend was devoted to keeping two homeless cats alive.

According to his blog, Church found the mother-son pair wandering around a lakeside subdivision in North Carolina while he was out for a run that weekend. Realizing they were "literally starving to death," he took them in, naming them after fellow country crooners June Carter and Jesse Colter.

But what should have been a happy ending had a hitch – Church is allergic to cats! So once the weekend was over, he reluctantly relinquished the animals to a nearby shelter, and from there, they went to a vet to be vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and treated for fleas and ticks.

Since the 1-year-old and 5-month-old had been through so much together – according to Church's blog they encountered thunderstorms and the constant threat of wild coyotes and bobcats in the woods from which they emerged – it was hoped they'd be adopted as a pair. And after a few weeks, they were, thanks to a loving fan. "A wonderful woman in N.C. has adopted Jesse and June," Church wrote in July. "Thanks to all of you for your responses!"

Now if only those cats could sing, they'd have quite the country hit on their hands – er, paws!
