When Barbara Walters visited the White House for a special Thanksgiving interview with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, she was greeted in the Grand Foyer. The group walked through the Red Room and Walters asked Obama about this year's turkey pardon. Obama started to discuss the merits of having a "back-up turkey," but the trio was surprised by a fourth eager participant.
"Hello, Bo!" Walters exclaimed, as the First Pooch bounded down the red carpet to meet the guest.
Bo excitedly wagged his tail, and the journalist asked the Obamas, "Does he do anything?" She then turned to the dog himself, and asked, "Do you shake hands?"
Incidentally, being the talented and well-trained Portuguese water dog that he is, Bo does shake. So he politely put out his paw for Walters – and then he rolled over for a tummy rub.
The Obamas looked on proudly, and the First Lady cooed, "I love you. I love you so."
"It's like having a son, isn't it?" Walters asked.
"I know," Mrs. Obama replied. "He's my boy."
As they continued through the Red Room, Mrs. Obama asked for Walters's discretion. "The girls will be upset," she said. "They don't need to know."
