The portrait above Petty Officer Jon Tumilson's coffin showed him smiling at the beach with his Labrador retriever Hawkeye by his side. And the moving photograph taken from the Navy SEAL's funeral in Rockford, Iowa, on Friday shows Hawkeye lying under Tumilson's coffin, where he stayed for the duration of the service.
Tumilson, 35, was killed along with more than 20 other SEALs in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan earlier this month. The photograph of Hawkeye at his master's funeral was taken by Tumilson's cousin, Lisa Pembleton.
"I felt compelled to take one photo to share with family members that couldn't make it or couldn't see what I could from the aisle," Pembleton wrote on Facebook.
While Hawkeye's feelings can't ever really be known, imagining his loss is heartbreaking.
