Following the March death of Knut the polar bear, Germany suffered another loss Wednesday when famed cross-eyed possum Heidi was put to sleep by her caretakers at the Leipzig Zoo.
"We carried out all possible examinations and treatments," director Jörg Junhold said in a statement, referencing Heidi's untreatable arthritis. "We made the final decision ... to relieve the animal from suffering and pain."
The 3½-year-old first garnered attention for her unexpectedly adorable look in December 2010 after a newspaper ran a photo of the animal. Prior to her passing, Heidi had gained over 360,000 Facebook fans, had a doll created in her likeness, and even correctly identified this year's Oscar winners during a special appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
