While Carson Kressley plays dancer, his dog, Scooby, is holding down the farm.

The TV star and fashion expert, who's currently cha-cha-ing his way through Dancing with the Stars, once said that his Christmas wish was to get a puppy and a boyfriend. Well, Santa was listening.

"The puppy happened," Kressley told PEOPLE at the American Humane Association Hero Dog Awards presented by Cesar Canine Cuisine. "Sometimes boyfriends are like puppies, too. Kind of like getting two for one."

Scooby, a 4-year-old boxer, "belonged to someone who could no longer care for the dog," but now she shares a lot of space with Kressley on his farm in Pennsylvania – and she loves it.

"We usually take our horses out on trail rides and she'll come with us," Kressley said. "One time, she actually crawled into one of those pipes along the dirt road. We were like, 'Oh my God, is she ever going to be able to turn around and get out?' That was about to be a search-and-rescue moment, but it didn't happen."

Since he's been spending long hours in L.A. training to take the next mirror ball trophy, Kressley hasn't been able to see Scooby as much as he'd like, but they'll have a brief reunion later this week. "I'll get to see her on Thursday," he said, "because I'm going home for, like, a minute."
