Cougartown star Christa Miller didn't want another dog. But one homeless puppy figured out that the best way into the star's home (and heart!) was through her husband, Cougartown co-creator Bill Lawrence.
"I went to visit Bill at work," Miller tells PEOPLE. "He was editing and someone that works near the editing offices comes in with this husky mom who's emaciated, and [puppy] Lulu. Because our last dog was a shepherd, I was like, 'Do not show this dog to Bill.' Ten minutes later, Bill's editing with Lulu on his chest."
The couple, who live in a beachfront Malibu, Calif., home with their three children, adopted Lulu, and six months later she's having a blast getting to know her new canine siblings, Mike and Apple.
"These rescue dogs have a good a life," she says. "They go crazy for the beach. In the morning no one's there – they love it."
But there's one place that's off-limits for this lovable brood. "I don't like dogs in bed. I'm not going to have my sleep disturbed by a dog," Miller says. "And I love my dogs, but my kids don't sleep in my bed and my dogs don't sleep in my bed."
"Good girl" Lulu is doing her best to follow the rules in her new home – and is even picking up some of the family traits. "She likes everybody, she's just like my husband," she says. "She's a little slutty, so everyone can give her love."
