The world is a strange, scary place for one newborn La Plata dolphin from Uruguay.
Beached near a resort in Montevideo, the tiny creature was recently found with her umbilical cord still attached to her. She was sent to the S.O.S Rescate Fauna Marina where her new friend – the rescue organization's head, Richard Tesore – has been bottle-feeding her and taking her for swims in the sea.
Hand-rearing an orphaned dolphin is a difficult undertaking, as Tesore knows all too well. Last year, he worked with another 10-day-old dolphin named Nipper, who washed ashore after he was apparently injured by a fishing net. Sadly, the baby died from hypothermia shortly after his rescue.
Here's hoping this little lady can make it through these critical early weeks!
