Adopt Me! Accident Survivor Mickey Is a Little Tough Guy
On Oct. 13 of last year, the injured stray arrived at the Halo Animal Rescue in Phoenix, Ariz., with serious wounds on his back that he sustained after a run-in with a vehicle. While thankfully, he suffered no broken bones, the young dog, who is named for the race car driver, went through painful procedures to help heal his significant road rash.
"They had to knock him out and then scrub his back intensely," says animal care manager Kim Zikmanis, "so that new skin would have a better chance of growing."
Though Mickey experienced a lot of pain, he stayed positive. "Even when he came in he licked your face," Zikmanis remembers. "He was wiggling his tail and he was happy."
A few months down the road, the "happy-go-lucky" canine is fully recovered. Though he will always have physical scars from the accident, the plucky medium-sized pup's personality make them fade very quickly.
"He needs somebody who's going to go hiking with him or play ball with him," she says. "Spaniels are really high-energy. He's going to need a home that can meet those needs for him."
Sweet-natured Mickey can be a tough guy when he wants to be – especially around male dogs.
"He'd probably be better with a female dog," she says. "I just think he's just trying to fit in. If another dog growls then he'll kinda get a little buff."
