Home. Some cats and dogs never have one to call their own. We want to help change that by introducing you to an extraordinary homeless pet every week. Today, we'd like you to meet Felix, a 4-year-old medium-sized cat who has special needs.

When Felix was given up by his previous owners in June of 2009 to the Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island, they neglected to mention that the friendly male kitty had a medical issue.

"When he came to us, we were not aware that he had been involved in some type of traumatic accident," shelter manager Jennifer Gebar tells PEOPLE. "The impact of whatever accident he had caused rear-end nerve damage. Because of that, he does have some bowel issues where he has trouble going to the bathroom on his own."

Almost three years later, Felix is still waiting for a forever home that will tend to his unique needs. He takes daily medication that helps him go and makes it easier when he does. Additionally, the Siamese-domestic shorthair mix is very dominant, dislikes other cats and has been known to spray to mark his territory.

"Ideally, we're trying to find him a home, maybe as a barn cat at this point," says Gebar, adding that an indoor-outdoor scenario with a garage or basement could work, too. "We prefer keeping cats indoors, but somebody needs to have an appropriate set-up for him."

Poor Felix has lived in a shelter for so long that he's forgotten how to be part of a family. "He's been through a lot," Gebar says. "We need somebody to slowly introduce him into a home."

This handsome kitty loves people, children, and would make a great sidekick for someone who doesn't have any other pets.

"He's a sweet, loving cat," she says. "We're just trying to find a safe place for him, where people are going to love him and accept him for who he is. It's not fair for him to be here for all this time."

If you want to give Felix the special forever home he needs, contact the shelter at (401) 783-7606.
