Adopt Me! Jackson Wants to Feel Safe – with You
The 5-year-old pooch has traveled far from the Los Angeles park where he was found wandering in 2009. Thanks to a network of animal rescuers, he's currently in Vancouver awaiting his forever home.
It's taken some time, but the anxious pooch, who is believed to have had a traumatic past, has made great strides building his confidence with anti-anxiety medication and training. His foster mom, Alexis Adams, founder of the Penny Foundation Dog Rescue Society, is looking for someone familiar with his breed to adopt him.
"He's very stubborn," she says. "He will intimidate you if you're not a pack leader. He needs an experienced adopter who will not let him get away with murder."
Blind in one eye, apparently due to trauma to his head, Jackson has been known to bare his teeth and growl when he feels threatened. He needs a patient owner who will make him feel safe and accept his idiosyncrasies.
"His one trigger is people crowding over top him. He doesn't like that because he feels trapped. As long as you don't do that, he's totally fine," says Adams. "With boundaries and guidance, he's a great dog."
The housetrained pooch, who likes other dogs, will win you over with his adorable habits, like collecting shoes. "He doesn't chew on them, he just likes to carry them around the house and hoards them in places," says Adams. And, you'll laugh when he dances on cue. "He gets up on his hind legs and moves his paws up and down," she adds.
The playful medium-sized dog loves being outside and does a great job keeping up with bikers. When he's not being active, he'll welcome a pampering. "When he goes to the groomer he struts his stuff afterwards," she says. "He kind of smiles and shows his underbite to you."
