Boothbay Harbor, Maine, may see plenty of lobsters, but hardly ever do they look like this.
A shrimp fisherman caught a 27-lb., 40-in. lobster Friday five miles off the Maine coast. The fisherman brought it to the Department of Marine Resources, which has been observing the crustacean in its aquarium.
Rocky, as the lobster has come to be known, is 4 lbs. heavier than the largest lobster previously brought to the aquarium.
The lobster's extreme size likely makes him quite old, as age can be approximated by a lobster's weight. Larry, an 11-lb. lobster once bound for the dinner table, was believed to be 70 years old.
Rocky, who was named in part for his hulking claws, reminiscent of a boxer's gloves, will not suffer the fate of the plate and will instead live out the rest of his life in the ocean.
