With 682 scouts in 38 troops across the country, the Dog Scouts of America are doing their part to better the community, raising funds for the Salvation Army and earning badges by helping clean up dog parks or learning how to protect their humans. –CBS News

Russ Berkman was all set to attend the practice round of the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta, Ga., when he came home to find his dog, Sierra, had eaten his tickets. Instead of admitting defeat, Berkman fed Sierra Hydrogen peroxide, which is safe to ingest, to make him throw up, and reassembled the tickets out of the vomit. –Yahoo! Sports

New research shows bees are capable of "self-medicating," often venturing out and collecting resin that can stave off bacterial and fungal infections to line the hive with. Before its significance was understood, resin, which is sticky and harder to manage, had often been avoided by beekeepers. –Huffington Post



Many of the 300 pit bulls rescued from a Philippine dog fighting ring will have to be put down based on their injuries, which include ripped ears and tongues, and a lack of resources to rehabilitate them. "The ones we put to sleep are the ones that deserve to be put to sleep based on their medical condition," said Wilford Almora, a veterinarian with the Philippine Animal Welfare Society. –AP

When couples break up, who retains custody of the pet can become a tricky issue, with most states categorizing pets as pieces of property rather than living beings. "Forty years ago, people were attached to their pets, but they weren't considered members of the family in the way they are now," said Chris Johnson, a family-law attorney, who has seen individuals spend thousands of dollars to hold onto a pet. –StarTribune.com
