Chris Colfer has a new roommate!

"I adopted a cat today from the West Valley Animal Shelter!" the Glee star Tweeted on Wednesday. "His name is Brian, he's 8 years old and 20 pounds!"

Colfer dropped by the Chatsworth, Calif., shelter that afternoon with a female friend, and without getting recognized, went to the cat room and picked out the declawed brown tabby.

"He was very nice," animal care technician Jesse Franco tells PEOPLE. "Not a lot of people adopt older cats."

Colfer didn't have to interact long with Brian before deciding to give him a forever home. It took just a few minutes for the actor to sign the adoption paperwork and await the cat's exit evaluation.

Brian had been surrendered in late March by his previous owner, who had adopted him a few years ago. "It's a big cat, but very sweet," Franco says. "I think that's why Chris liked it."

Colfer urged his Twitter followers to consider the shelter as an option for finding pets. "It was heartbreaking to see so many sweet animals needing homes," he wrote. "Please think about rescuing!"
