A Scottish woman was attacked by a pair of cheetahs while visiting a game park in South Africa for her 60th birthday. The animals bit and clawed at her head, stomach and legs for more than three minutes. "We never for one moment thought they would attack," she said, while her husband added, "They said they were extremely tame and one could stroke them." –ABC News

A leaked toxicology report reveals that two dolphins that died at a Swiss zoo in November were killed from ingesting a heroin substitute after land near the dolphins' training pool was rented out for a rave. Opiates prevented the dolphins from registering when to surface and breathe. –Daily Mail

Vienna opened its first cat cafe on May 4, called Cafe Neko, which comes from the Japanese word for cat. The eatery is home to five feline hosts – Sonja, Thomas, Moritz, Luca and Momo – who come from a shelter and now have the run of the place, free to interact with its customers. –MSNBC.com



A horse escaped its stables and ran into rush hour traffic in Queens, N.Y., Monday morning, smashing the driver side window of a passing car. The motorist was taken to a hospital for treatment, while the horse, named Blackjack, sustained a gash on its upper leg, but is expected to live. –New York Daily News

A onetime Texas shelter dog received the 30th National Hero Dog award from L.A.'s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals after it found help for its owner when she fell down the stairs and lost consciousness. The German shepherd, named Bear, scratched on every front door until it caught the attention of an animal control officer, who Bear then led to his fallen owner. –AP
