A Texas judge has ruled that a pig is, in fact, a type of pet. The ruling comes after a dispute in which a homeowners association wanted to evict a family for raising a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig. "Homeowners associations are there, on one hand, to maintain a neighborhood in a particular way, but they also have responsibilities not to infringe too much on homeowner's use of their land the way they see fit," said District Judge Mike Engelhart. –MySanAntonio.com

One in 12 cats suffers from chronic kidney disease, the leading killer among felines. Cats diagnosed in the early stages live for two to three years, while those diagnosed in later stages live only a few months. –AP

A Connecticut animal shelter created a pet food pantry where pet owners facing financial hardship can collect a month's worth of dog or cat food free of charge. The Stamford Animal Rescue hopes it will keep owners from abandoning their pets when it becomes difficult to afford their care. –The Stamford Times
