After being given a bone by a passing cyclist, a stray dog followed him and his team on a 1,100-mile ride through China. The dog was named Xiaosa, and has become an Internet celebrity after one of the cyclists began blogging about her. –ABC News

Zoos are now being forced to let certain species of animals die out in order to save others by better pooling their resources and committing to their care. "There needs to be an explicit role for zoos to champion species," said Dr. Steven L. Monfort, the director of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. –New York Times

U.S. Marines and a 60 Minutes correspondent banded together to bring a stray puppy back from near-death in Afghanistan. "I just watched for a little while, and it was very clear from the first moment that all these Marines loved this little dog. They were mad about him," said reporter Lara Logan. –CBS News



Hollis Owens' dog, Sky, is helping her pay for college. The black Labrador Retriever got Owens a scholarship from the American Kennel Club after Sky was rescued, and the pair began training to become a competitive and therapy dog. –WSLS 10
