What's in a name? For a dog called Mugly, it's a whole lot of ugly.
The 8-year-old Chinese crested, already one of the U.K.'s ugliest dog honorees, won the coveted title of World's Ugliest Dog at California's Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds on Friday. Mugly, a rescue, bested 28 other contestants and received a prize of $1,000.
"I couldn't speak when they announced Mugly's name," the dog's owner, Bev Nicholson, said in a release. "I didn't know which way to look. I was shaking as much as the dog."
Even though he was more than 5,000 miles away from home, Mugly showed off his British pride by sporting Union Jack-embellished accessories. Nicholson, for her part, wore the flag of the United Kingdom on her flip-flops.
Last year's World's Ugliest Dog winner, a 15-year-old Chihuahua mix named Yoda, died in her sleep last Wednesday, two days before the contest. Yoda's owner, Terry Schumacher, said the contest "allowed Yoda to be the star I always knew she was."
