Some people have a clothes habit, Kellie Pickler has an animal habit.
"My husband will not let me have any more animals than we do now," she tells PEOPLE. "He never knows when the bus rolls up at home, I open the bus door, and he's wondering what critter's going to crawl off of there now."
The Nashville-based country singer has a bevy of pets – including three dogs and a python named Boots – but husband Kyle Jacobs is trying to rein in his wife's tendencies.
Pickler first let on about her animal obsession when she told PEOPLE about her "kids" in 2009. Though she had just three pets at the time, she said, "I'm sure that it's going to get even more crazy because I'm such an animal lover."
"If I see a dog sitting anywhere on the road, I'm going to put him on the bus and find him a home," she told PEOPLE at the 2010 CMA Music Festival. "I've been notoriously known for giving animals away at concerts."
Pickler's most memorable recent rescue was Chunk, a pit bull she found with a broken pelvis and venomous snake bite last summer. After nursing him back to health, she had to find him a permanent home – but not without a few tears.
"I love being able to take in rescue dogs, rescue animals," Pickler says. "But the sad thing is when you get attached to them and you have to give them away."
