A 6-week-old puppy in California died after it successfully alerted its owners to a fire in their home. Police officers were forced to shoot and kill one chimpanzee and tranquilize another in Las Vegas on Thursday when the two began acting in an aggressive manner. "The male, which was estimated to weigh 170 pounds, was pounding on cars and damaging vehicles," said Officer Laura Meltzer, forcing it to be shot, while the female was tranquilized. Officers are unsure of where the chimps escaped from, but believe it was a local home. –Los Angeles Times
A newborn giant panda from Tokyo's Ueno Zoo died just six days after its birth after battling pneumonia. The unnamed male cub was the first giant panda cub born at the zoo in 24 years, and is believed to have contracted pneumonia when its mother's milk got into its lungs. –Wall Street Journal
Cat owners living in and around Houston, Texas, are being warned to be on the lookout for two possible dangers to their felines. Residents of the Lazybrook/Timbergrove area have fallen prey for 4 years to cat mutilations believed to have been done at human hands, while coyotes in the Braeswood Place subdivision are suspected in the disappearance of 25 cats over 18 months. –Houston Chronicle
