Inspired by the truffle dogs of Europe, purveyors in Oregon's growing truffle market are advocating for greater usage of truffle-sniffing dogs in order to raise the value of their truffles, which are often harmed by other methods of sniffing them out. "Scent training is one of the easiest things you can do with a dog, because of the natural proclivity," said Elizabeth Kalik, who founded the NW Truffle Dogs program and has since trained 46 dogs. –New York Times
A bone disorder called mucopolysaccharidoses that affects a rare breed of dog called the Brazilian terrier has been found to be caused by a single gene mutation, leading researchers to believe that the disorder could be eliminated through smart breeding.
