Pet ownership has dropped 2.4 percent since 2006 in the United States, according to a new study released by the American Veterinary Medical Association. "Very likely it's related to the economy," said Dr. Ron DeHaven, the association's chief executive officer. "As pets are living out their natural lives, they're not being replaced due to the economic concerns that go with responsible pet ownership." –New York Daily News

A Bengal tiger cub has temporarily taken up residence at a Mexican animal shelter after his previous home, a park, was shut down by officials for failing to comply with its permit. Until an agreement can be reached over his custody, the cub cannot be moved, and the shelter has had to accommodate the big cat by putting him in a large cage that once held up to 21 dogs, but now features a kiddie pool, a swing made from an old tire, a tree trunk to use as a scratching post and a desk so he can sleep in a high place. –Fox News

WaWa Inc. has paid a New Jersey man $12,500 to settle a claim in which Patrick Stark stated he repeatedly had difficulty getting served at the Millville location because of his service dog, which was sometimes asked to be left outside. In addition to the payment, WaWa Inc. said it would also place signs welcoming service dogs in their New Jersey locations, and educate employees on proper protocol. –ABC News

A new study conducted by German and Swiss researchers on pectoral sandpiper birds discovered that the males who slept less sired more offspring, going against conventional wisdom. "Even losing a relatively small amount of sleep, just a couple of hours a night, has adverse effects on our ability to perform waking functions," said the study's co-author Dr. Niels Rattenborg. –BBC
