One of the world's oldest giant pandas died early Wednesday at the age of 34 following a decline in his health over the past several months. Bao Bao lived at the Berlin zoo, and had been given to West Germany by China in 1980. –AP

A Westfield, Mass., couple drowned in a pond during a boat ride Monday evening while seemingly trying to rescue their dog, a West Highland white terrier named Sadie. Family speculates that Daniel Cyr jumped into the water to save the dog (who survived), and his wife, Patricia, dove in after her husband of 40 years when he became distressed. –Boston Globe

A box turtle is being held by California's Oceanside Humane Society after it was found in a eucalyptus tree taped to a bundle of blue and green balloons on Sunday. The fire department was called to the scene, but a gust of wind ultimately set the turtle back safely to the ground. –ABC News

Fast food chain In-N-Out Burger is no longer doing business with the Central Valley Meat Co. of Hanford, Calif., which is under investigation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA is looking into concerns that the slaughterhouse, closed since Monday, was inhumanely treating its animals and allowing beef from sick cattle to infiltrate the human food supply. –AP
