Talk about precious cargo: For dogs and cats who live the lives of jetsetters, JetBlue Airways is offering unlimited flights for furry friends this fall at a one-shot price of $299. Dubbed the "All Your Pet Can Jet" pass, human passengers will be able to add one pet to any number of JetBlue bookings for flights between Sept. 7 and Dec. 31.

New research suggests that chimpanzees that hold hands during grooming may be reacting to a cultural influence, as opposed to genetics or the environment. Researchers have observed at least 15 groups of chimps engaged in an above-the-head hand-holding signal, which a doctoral student in the Netherlands described as "a shared community tradition."

Eighteen smooth green snakes found new homes Wednesday after they were relocated to the Lake County Forest Preserve from a Chicago zoo. The rare reptiles are listed as an Illinois Species in Greatest Need of Conservation, and those heading to the prairie as part of the zoo's "soft release" will live in a controlled environment that limits predators.

A family dog is the lone survivor of a fire that killed a Griswold, Conn., couple on Tuesday. Houdini, a 10-year-old Labrador/German shepherd mix, escaped the burning house, where three of the couple's other dogs and several pet cats also died.

Despite rocky economic times, PetSmart's stock has nearly tripled since the 2008 financial crisis. Chief Executive Bob Moran attributes the surge of the stock, now priced at about $71 a share, to the "humanization of pets" that has taken dogs "from the barnyard, to the backyard, to the back porch, to inside the house, to inside the bedroom, to under the sheets."
