Chris Colfer is mourning the loss of his dearly departed pet, golden retriever Jake, who passed away Wednesday.
"I had him for ten years," the actor tells PEOPLE. "I had him since I was 12."
Thankfully, the Glee star got to spend some quality time with his best furry friend over the summer, when he and his family rented a house in Pismo Beach, Calif.
"I am really glad we got to take him to the beach before he passed," Colfer says of the trip, during which he also rescued a stingray.
"He was one of those dogs who was the worst puppy," he continues, "but then became the best dog after a few years."
In addition to Jake, Colfer is also the proud pet dad to a senior cat named Brian, whom he adopted in April.
