Home. Some pets never have one to call their own. We'd like to help change that by introducing you to extraordinary adoptable pets every week. Today, meet Batman, Fiona and Superman, three dogs who've been through a lot in their short lives.

In April, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter received nearly 50 dogs in one night from an alleged hoarding case in a rural area of New Mexico. Because of legal issues, shelter staffers weren't allowed to spay or neuter the animals, and soon they had more than 70 dogs on their hands. It took time, but they were able to find homes for all of the pooches, except for these three heeler mixes, all 2 years old.

Batman is a playful boy, and given the time, could become the love of someone's life. Sweetheart Fiona loves nothing more than to lounge – so much so, that the shelter's staff has considered renaming her Sleeping Beauty. Last is Superman, an eager-to-please pooch who is highly treat-motivated, making him the perfect candidate for training.

Because of their past, though, these adorable pups, who can be adopted separately, will definitely need patient owners who understand that it takes time for traumatized dogs to bond with humans.

"They may be shy and fearful at first meeting," says public information officer Ben Swan. "But once they are comfortable, they will be yours and will reward you with unconditional love."

If you think Batman, Fiona or Superman – who are currently getting canine socialization and one-on-one care with the Santa Fe Tails Daycare, Dog Academy and Resort – are the companions you've been searching for, contact the Santa Fe Animal Shelter at (505) 983-4309.
