A very unusual bundle of joy arrived at the Reynosa Zoo in northern Mexico this week. Meet Khumba the zonkey, an extremely rare donkey and zebra hybrid that is only the second of its kind to be born in the last two years.
Ignacio the donkey and Rayas the zebra are said to be very proud parents, even if staff at the zoo have been quite surprised by the new addition, who looks a diminutive donkey wearing zebra-patterned socks.
The little tyke’s parents should plan a transcontinental playdate with Ippo, another zonkey born to a zebra and a donkey at an animal reserve in Florence, Italy, last year. The animal’s arrival was a first for that country.
