Best acceptance speech ever?
Merritt Wever barely uttered two sentences as she stepped onstage to collect her Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy, for her role as Zoey Barkow in Nurse Jackie – but her look of shock said it all.
“Thanks so much. Thank you so much,” she said while fumbling with the card presenters Amy Poehler and Tina Fey had just pulled out of an envelope, apparently attempting to confirm her name was indeed there.
For a moment it looked as though Wever, 33, would give a traditional speech, but she apparently decided against it.
“I gotta go. Bye,” she announced, and ran off as the audience – and the Twitterverse – roared in approval.
After a commercial break, host Neil Patrick Harris summed up her big moment: “Merritt Wever, best speech ever.”
Later, it seemed Wever – who also has a recurring role on New Girl – still hadn’t had much time to compose herself as she spoke to reporters just after her win.
“I want to thank a lot of people – it’s happening again,” she said, but managed to continue.
“I wanted to thank everyone at Showtime. I wanted to thank most of all Edie Falco,” she said, before managing to tick off a few more names.
