Kari Whitman’s Greener Pup line of cool and eco-friendly dog beds are already favorites of Denise Richards, Kristen Bell, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Shannon Elizabeth, Lacey Schwimmer and Jessica Alba.

"I developed Greener Pup while I was looking for dog beds for Jessica Alba, who was going green in the new home I was designing for her," Whitman, an interior designer and owner of a non-profit dog rescue, tells PEOPLEPets.com.

Whitman couldn’t find any dog beds that she liked so she decided to create her own attractive line that would also be good for the planet — and help save dogs.

Each dog bed contains 70-120 recycled plastic bottles as filler and is covered with colorful, luxury fabrics from high-end home projects, which otherwise would be discarded to landfills. The beds come in four sizes (round or rectangle), from small to extra large, and accommodate all sizes and breeds of pooches.

"I did a ton of research on eco-friendly fillers — experimenting with everything from corn to bottles, using my rescue dogs Madi and Lucy as test subjects," Whitman says. "I went with the filler from the recycled plastic bottles because it is breathable, won’t attract insects, and it is great for dog allergies."

Everything from the bed covers to the fillers is made from recycled materials. The blue and green or lighter, earth-tone covers are removable and machine-washable, so there is no need to dry-clean — meaning no harmful toxins.

Whitman, who is involved with as many environmental causes as she is with abandoned and abused dogs, believes every pet should have a comfortable and cozy bed to match the rooms in a house, so she made the line affordable with dozens of fabrics.

Prices range from $39.99 to $97.99. Plus, she offers 25 percent discounts to people who have rescued a dog, or for those who can prove they have a financial hardship.

And 100 percent of the profits of the dog beds go to the Ace of Hearts Foundation, Whitman’s non-profit dedicated to saving shelter dogs on the day they are to be euthanized and placing them in loving homes.

"This is my passion!" she says. "Saving the lives of dogs. It is a gift that keeps on giving."
