"Watching the owners turn these balls of hair into something so intricate and detailed really does baffle anyone watching," says photographer
Ren Netherland, who has spent more than 10 years traveling the United States, taking pictures of dogs competing in "extreme grooming" competitions. "You have no clue whatsoever what they're planning." At times the only professional shutterbug allowed to snap shots of the pups featured at some of these shows, Netherland, 48, has seen what would seem unbelievable unless documented: poodles turned camels, poodles turned fairies, even poodles turned NFL football players! "One of the reasons I love my job is because I love animals so much," he told London's
Daily Mail in an interview. "I much prefer working with them than people."
Extreme grooming is a high stakes world — competitors can nab up to $1,000 per show for their looks — and while Netherland finds some of the processes laughable, he thinks the animals do truly enjoy themselves. "By the time the dogs get to me after they have been through the tournament they are bounding around and very happy," he says. "I think all the attention that gets bestowed upon them through the whole process must be nice for them.'"

Yes, the pictures are fascinating and beautiful. I just have trouble believing that the dogs really enjoy this process. I understand they get a lot of attention. They also must be poked, prodded, pulled and made to stand still. This is not a pet, this is a stuffed animal. There should be a difference.

Pathetic!
If you (2 legs) really love and care for us, how can let this thing happen?
Most of us, 4 legs (dogs and cats...mostly) who became BABY(some special meaning on this..) yes, we let our mom does put kind of clothes on as long as this makes us comfortable and kind of fun for short time! It seems these so-called 'loving animal', 2 legs, trying to eliminate our IDENTITY!!! When the things goes over, no matter whom and what are addressed for, it has never been a good idea...resulted PATHETIC!!!
I just say GOD BLESS THOSE!!!

I also think that the poodle probaly does not like to be dressed like that. It is an animal not a dress up toy.

I agree with 2cats1dog. This is just gross and demeaning to these poor dogs. Standard Poodle are gorgeous, dignified animals and to be used this way is just plain sad. Where the heck is PETA?
I for one don't feel like LOL in fact I want to cry. Look at that poor animals face.

I do not agree with this at all. I feel bad for the dogs that are subjected to this humiliation.
