REVIEW: Dog Brick Makes Fido Work for His Grub

You think your dog enjoys being served his meals without ever having to lift a paw? Well, maybe. But isn’t that boring? Dog-lover Nina Ottosson develops interactive game for canines like the Dog Brick, which offers your dog a chance to return to his roots—and work for his food.

The idea behind the product ($42.95 on Amazon) is to provide a fun way for your dog to exercise his mind and earn a treat while doing it. To start off, place your dog’s favorite snack in each compartment, keeping the covers open so Fido gets a whiff and becomes intrigued. Once your dog seems comfortable taking food out of the Brick, up the ante by sliding the compartments halfway closed. Fido will then be interested enough to work the lids open to get at the grub. Gradually increase the difficulty until all the compartments are closed - concealing all of the treats.

My dog Zoey (above), a soft coated Wheaten terrier, zipped right through each stage and within minutes was using her teeth to lift out the bone-shaped covers and sliding the compartments open with her paws to get at the goods.

Make sure to always supervise your dog since the pieces seem small enough for larger dogs to swallow. Also, it’s a good idea to wipe down the game after each use -- the slobber factor can be quite high.
